The Energy of Places

4 Ways to Create a Sanctuary at Home

I just moved to a new art studio this year and it’s had me reflecting on the energy of places: how we feel in a suburb, city, or even just a single room.

Before moving here, I used to drive through this suburb and feel something closed off about it, insular. Now that I moved my studio here, I can see it differently: beautiful, wrapped in healing nature, and with neighbours who’ve been nothing but kind.

But what I had been sensing before is that this suburb’s energy is still very much rooted in the 80s and 90s!

It makes sense. Most of the people here are baby boomers who raised their families in those decades. Since moving in, I even catch myself reaching for 80s and 90s playlists, as though tuning into that generational imprint.

Have you ever felt the energy of a place? That strange dissonance that makes you feel like you don’t belong, or the deep resonance of being exactly where you’re meant to be?

Often, it’s because we’re picking up on the thoughtforms, beliefs, worldviews and lived histories of the people who’ve shaped that place. Places hold memory, frequency, and subtle vibrations that touch us more than we realise.

The beautiful thing is, whether you feel harmony or dissonance in your wider environment, you always have the power to create a sanctuary at home. A bubble of peace, attuned to your frequency.

Here are a four ways I love creating sanctuary:

🌿 Embrace biophilia
Bring nature inside: plants, dried foliage, pieces of driftwood or branches. Natural textures like wood, linen and clay help connect your home back to the earth.

💎 Create a crystal grid
Placing crystals at the four points of your room or home creates a light-filled shield of energy. I love selenite for its luminous, high vibration, and black kyanite for its protective, grounding qualities. You can use rose quartz for love, citrine for abundance, or amethyst in a meditative space for intuition.

🎨 Invite in healing art
Choose art that uplifts you, that feels like it transmits peace or wonder into the room. This is why I create the work I do: paintings as portals of energy for the spaces they live in.

🌈 Use intentional colour
One or two intentional pops of colour can shift the energy of a room. Warm, bright hues feel activating and social, while cooler tones invite rest and calm. Surround them with neutrals for balance.

No matter where we live, we have the power to shape the energy of our homes into places of beauty, rest and renewal.
